Greek EU Election Outcomes
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) party maintains its lead of 3.7 percentage points against the senior coalition government partner New Democracy (ND) party in Sunday's European Parliament elections.
The opposition party was projected to receive 26.7 percent of the vote, which is almost identical to the percentage it received in the 2012 general elections. New Democracy was expected to get 22.8 percent and the Elia (Olive Tree) alliance, led by PASOK, 8.1 percent.
Golden Dawn neo-Nazi party was on course to gain just over 9 percent of the vote, which was some 2 percentage points higher than its result in the June 2012 national elections. Despite its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, and several of the party’s MPs being in pretrial custody on charges of forming a criminal organization, Golden Dawn was set to elect three MEPs to the European Parliament.
Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said the result left no room for SYRIZA to claim that it could “overthrow” the government.
“There is no issue of early elections,” he said.
SYRIZA spokesman Panos Skourletis, who questioned whether New Democracy and PASOK had a mandate to handle issues of national importance.
“This government cannot handle the negotiations regarding debt relief, an issue that will affect Greece for the next decades,” he added. “It now lacks the political legitimacy to do so.”
Here follow the provisional results of the Euro ballot with 95.3 pct of the votes counted, according to the Interior Ministry:
SYRIZA: 26.52 pct (6 MEPs)
New Democracy (ND): 22.77 pct (5 MEPs)
Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi): 9.40 pct (3 MEPs)
Elia: 8.03 pct (2 MEPs)
Potami: 6.60 pct (2 MEPs)
Communist Party of Greece (KKE): 6.08 pct (2 MEPs)
Independent Greeks (Anexartitoi Ellines): 3.44 pct (1 MEP)
LAOS: 2.70 pct
Greek European Citizens: 1.44 pct
Democratic Left (DIMAR): 1.21 pct
