Theocharis Resigns

Finance minister Yannis Stournaras and General Secretary of Public Revenues Haris Theocharis finally announced the latter's resignation after a five hour meeting.

In an emotionally charged atmosphere the two announced Mr Theocharis' resignation “due to personal reasons,” after their marathon “personal” conversation.

Mr Theocharis let loose innuendos aimed at the government, characteristically noting that “No one had the stature to ask for my resignation.”

He also added: “I don't feel that something went wrong with my work. Those that believe so should look at their own actions,” clarifying that he personally had taken no measures, but only attempted to enforce the decisions of a democratically elected government.

As concerns tax evasion, Mr Theocharis stated that for cases of great wealth, up to yesterday, 270 cases had been uncovered that concern tax evasion to the tune of 80 million euros, while another 130 cases will be announced over the next few days.

Messrs Stournaras and Theocharis lauded their relationship and collaboration, while the finance minister stressed that “we could have done better in the tax evasion issue.”

None of the two bothered to explain why, if their relationship was so great, Mr Theocharis decided to tender his resignation. Already the government is initiating processes to fill the vacancy through an open competition.
