SYRIZA MPs defend convicted terrorist
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Two SYRIZA MPs, Vasiliki Katrivanou and Tasos Kourakis were in court in Piraeus today, testifying on behalf of Savas Xiros, the convicted terrorist requesting his release for health reasons.
A political controversy is on the rise and not for the first time. SYRIZA MPs have a tendency to stand by various requests by convicted terrorists. This time, it was convicted terrorist Savas Xiros' request to spend the rest of his sentence in his home, which was supported by two opposition MPs.
Vasiliki Katrivanou and Tasos Kourakis were in court in Piraeus today, testifying on behalf of the November 17 terrorist, claiming that “the state is obligated to show its humanity” towards convicts. “We're here as members of the parliament committee, having witnessed the prison hospital and being aware of the awful conditions it is in”, said Katrivanou.
She added that we don't want to destroy convicts and we, as a society, are obligated to do something about a man who has a 93% disability. Kourakis, on the other hand, noted that he would do the same regardless of the convict, or their crime, adding that it is the right of any prisoner to have such a request when they are facing such serious health issues.
It would appear that Xiros is facing multiple health problems with his eyesight and his hearing and if what his lawyer is saying checks out, he is also suffering from MS. His lawyer claims that his client's medical needs require multiple runs to the prison hospital, which is unable to provide the patient with the necessary treatments.
This is not the first time SYRIZA MPs and members have appeared on the side of terrorists' defense, offering opponents, particularly conservative ones, to keep their argument that SYRIZA is on the side of left-wing terrorism alive. No doubt, New Democracy will take advantage of this argument again, causing yet another row of political bickering, the kind that are getting old by the hour.
