Tsipras: Submarines Huge Scandal
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
"A huge political, economic, and defense scandal," was how SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras characterized the contracts for the purchase of six German-designed Type-214 submarines by Greece.
Mr. Tsipras was speaking at a gathering of workers at the Skaramangas shipyard. The SYRIZA leader spoke of a scandal that was bigger than the original contract for the four subs, signed by Akis Tsohatzopoulos.
The SYRIZA leader said that the governments of the memorandum would be held to account for the "crime" they committed at Skaramangas, noting that "Greek taxpayers had paid 2.5 billion euros to build six state-of-the-art submarines and have received just one.
He also noted that four almost ready submarines are rotting at their berths, because the owner of the shipyards, Mr. Safa, is holding the submarines and the workers hostage.
As Mr. Tsipras noted the Greek state must denounce the contract and sue Mr. Safa's Abu Dhabi Mar for damages, and regain control of the shipyards and finish the submarines, retaining jobs and know-how.
