Museum of Naval Tradition Relocates

The grand opening of the Museum of Naval Tradition will be held on Thursday, July 17, at 19:30, in the presence of the Minister of Administrative Reformation and Electronic Governance Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The museum will be housed in a new venue in Perama, near the Gate of the Naval Base, after 22 years of operation.

The Museum of Naval Tradition has been operating since 1992 and is a nonprofit organization with thousands of exhibits, and is maintained solely through private donations without ever having received sponsorships from any ministry. The Tipaldos and Potamianos shipping families were the founders of the museum, while Andreas Potamianos was Chairman of the Museum for several years.

In previous years, the Museum operated in a stone warehouse belonging to the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA), in the port of Piraeus. However, the new design plans of the PPA did not include the Museum at that site, so it was searching for a new venue, which it found in Perama, with the help of the then Mayor Pantelis Zoumboulis, through the implementation of an EU program (URBAN) for the construction of a naval museum in an area partly donated by the Hellenic Navy.
The Municipality of Perama could not create "from scratch" and then operate the museum venue alone, so the City Council decided by mutual agreement and cooperation with the Museum of Naval Tradition to operate a modern naval museum in Perama, a city steeped in naval tradition.
