PPC Referendum Remains Pending

The list for tendered demands for conducting a referendum on the issue of PPC DEH is being finalized by opposition parties.

The number of signatures for a debate by the House plenum has over exceeded the necessary number of 120 deputies that are necessitated by House rules and the Constitution.

The seven proposals have been signed by a total of 139 deputies. However, it's not clear whether the set aims can be achieved, as the proposal by the communist party, KKE, may not be counted among the votes because it asks for a referendum not just on the specific issue, but also as concerns a number of laws that, since 1990, have led to the deregulation of the energy sector. The Constitution specifically sets out that a referendum can be held only on a voted in bill, and not on a law.

Without the KKE, the remaining votes (SYRIZA, ANEL, GD, DIMAR) and the independent deputies along with Vyron Polydoras total 127 deputies, more than enough to proceed to a debate.

According to reports in the press the alliance of the four parties and the independents could prove fragile, since there is displeasure within DIMAR for a joint vote with Golden Dawn, with many deputies telling leadership so. This may herald a withdrawal of the party from the coalition. A decision is expected from DIMAR.

A DIMAR withdrawal would leave 116 deputies on the specific roll
