An SMS message by a disguised police officer, who along with her partner pretended to be a “couple in love”, led to the arrest of Nikos Maziotis yesterday.
Greek police are seeking a hideout or other clues that could shed light on the activities of Revolutionary Struggle after Nikos Maziotis, the leader of the leftist guerrilla group, was arrested following a dramatic shootout in central Athens yesterday.
An SMS message by a disguised police officer, who along with her partner pretended to be a “couple in love”, gave away Nikos Maziotis yesterday. The officer saw a man that she thought looked like Maziotis at the Omonia ISAP train station and immediately gave a signal to the anti-terrorist squad. The man (Nikos Maziotis) took the train from Omonia square train station towards Piraeus and apparently after realizing he was “watched”, he left the train at the next station, Monastiraki.
Counter-terrorism officers are focusing on an area running from Patissia in central Athens to Grammatiko and Keratea in northeastern Attica, as well as the southern Attica suburb. Key element in police search were the keys found in Maziotis backpack after the shooting. Police, according to information, are searching the area of Patissia and Kipseli, where he allegedly lived with this wife. He usually traveled by the train or the metro and was always disguised as a man, under the name Michail Michelakis. The counter-terrorism squad is focusing its attention on a fake identification card which Maziotis was carrying when arrested, in order to locate his hideout and, possibly, a small arms depot or a garage.
