Greek Islands Face Water Shortages
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Water shortages are emerging as a dire problem for the islands of the small Cyclades and the Dodecanese, while reserves even on Mykonos are reaching their limits, during the most demanding period of the year.
The throngs of tourists, in conjunction with delays in repairing and maintaining desalination units, are the main reasons that water reserves are at their limits for many islands. And then there are cases like on Schinousa where water allocation is conducted through coupons.
Islands in danger are Koufonissia, Amorgos, Kimolos, Patmos, Arkioi, Symi, Leros, and Kastellorizo. At Schinousa the desalination units are out of order due to their age, and the new one is as yet not operational.
In July, water was running for an average of two hours a day, and not for all homes, since altitude and area complicated things.
On Mykonos, the problem seems to have been overcome, through the renting of two desalination units.
