The political storm that erupted against the backdrop of Maria Karystianou’s statements on abortions shows no sign of abating, as her proposal for a “public consultation” on the issue was considered anachronistic and outdated by almost all of the country’s political forces.
For seven months, a 49-year-old Ukrainian had managed to mislead the authorities so that the well-planned murder of a 64-year-old hotelier with whom he had personal differences appeared as a traffic accident. However, a more careful investigation, as well as information provided by citizens, even through social media, led to the investigation of the murder.
Pandora’s box was opened by Maria Karystianou’s remarks yesterday, as her response to a question about abortions on the television station Open provoked both negative and positive reactions from the political world, as well as within the ranks of the victims’ relatives. Ms Karystianou has ridden the crest of a wave of popularity based on her becoming the face of the families of vitims of the Tempi train disaster, and has embarged on a political career with an aim at taking part in the 2027 elections.
