Featured Event with Epirotan music with Christopher King

Α tribute to the work of the musician Christopher C. King, who has highlighted, through his work and research, the traditional music of Epirus throughout the world, is organized by the Hellenic-American Cultural Foundation.

In particular, the event will take place on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 7 pm at the Rubin Museum of Art (150 West 17th Street), with Christopher King – who has received honorary Greek citizenship – presenting the his work "Destiny from Epirus: An Odyssey in Europe's Oldest Surviving Folk Music", which deals with the powerfully cathartic nature of this ancient Greek folk music, was included in the Wall Street Journal's "Best Books" list Journal", in 2018.

The presentation will be accompanied by a rich musical program, since there will be live musical breaks with a performance of Continental Music by Aurel Quirjo, Beth Bahia Cohen and John Themelis, but also by rare 78rpm records owned by Christopher King.

At the same time, Nicholas Cage, who is an award-winning journalist - researcher for the "New York Times" and author of seven acclaimed books, will have his own section in the presentation, giving important information regarding Epirus, from which comes from, and will moderate the Q&A with Christopher King.

The evening will conclude with the musicians performing a set of Continental Music, followed by a reception following the program.

Deep appreciation for Continental Music

As he had stated during his appearance at TEDXAthens, King had become fascinated by the music of Epirus while investigating some records he had found dusty in the attic of a vintage store.

"I am a collector of analog records from all over the world. I make stories out of these records. New music for me is 79ers that haven't been heard since they were first recorded. I came back to America and listened to these records. I understood that it was 'new music'. And they sounded like blues to me, Delta Blues to be exact, or early country music. These records I realized were a lost musical biosphere. And I discovered that the music came from a region in northwestern Greece. Epirus. A place that I would soon discover that 'contains' this lost, healing, function of Music. Which could heal the individual and heal the community," King had emphasized.
