US State Department: Greece is a leading force in Counterterrorism and a model for other countries

Responding to a question from Kathimerini following recent remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio concerning Greece, a State Department spokesperson emphasized the long-standing security cooperation between Athens and Washington, describing it as one of the strongest partnerships of its kind in the world.

“By jointly confronting far-left and anarchist terrorism, Greece and the United States have built a long-standing security partnership that ranks among the strongest in the world,” the State Department spokesperson said.

The spokesperson noted that references to the shared losses suffered by both countries as a result of terrorism underline both the seriousness of the threat and the importance of international cooperation in combating it.

The State Department also pointed out that Greece has demonstrated “great determination and effectiveness” in addressing this particular threat, even during periods when other governments failed to fully recognize it or underestimated its significance.

“Greece is a leading force in counterterrorism and a model for other countries in confronting this threat,” the spokesperson emphasized.

Regarding Mr. Rubio’s reference to the November 17 terrorist organization, the State Department stated that the United States “will never forget” its diplomats and personnel who lost their lives abroad while serving their country.

In his remarks, the U.S. Secretary of State cited examples of far-left political terrorism in Greece, the United States, and other countries, reflecting Washington’s view that this represents a threat with an international dimension.
