Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his confidence on a positive outlook for Greece in 2020 in his New Year message, which began with him observing what he called "optimism breezing around us and a new national confidence being established." He also spoke of a newly established "belief that we deserve better and that, united, we can finally propel Greece forward."

The Greek capital is ready to welcome Christmas and the New Year with a spectacular array of celebrations and events named “Feel the Magic,” announced Athens’ new Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis.

Athens welcomed the New Year with a fireworks display on the stroke of midnight following a day of celebratory events in central Athens. Hundreds of people ignored the bitter cold and joined the crowd that had gathered in the neighborhood of Thisio where the municipality of Athens was hosting music gigs to bid farewell to 2016 and welcome the New Year.
