Libyan fleet chief writes in Greek of taking Tripoli and dashing Ankara’s plans

Featured Libyan fleet chief writes in Greek of taking Tripoli and dashing Ankara’s plans

In a post on his Facebook account that has created quite a sensation, Admiral Faraj al-Mahdawi, head of the Libyan Fleet, strongly expressed his opposition to Erdogan’s agreement with Fayez al-Sharjam on maritime borders. The Libyan admiral wrote specifically in fluent Greek: “We will liberate the capital, Tripoli, and destroy the Turkish dream.”

The commander of the Libyan fleet belongs to General Khalifa Haftar’s forces of the Libyan National Army, which controls most of Libya today and opposes the pro-Turkish government of Sharjah. Like dozens of other soldiers under Muammar Gaddafi, Mahdawi studied at the Hellenic Naval Cadets School from 1973 to 1978, then returned to his home country with a brilliant career in the Navy.

The commander of the Libyan Fleet was a classmate with the president of the Athens War Museum, ret. Admiral Athanasios Panagopoulos, whom he met at an event five years ago in a warm climate.

Admiral Mahdawi’s posts on social media have a strong Greek hue, as do many of his photographs, such as the one depicting him as a young man in Hellenic Navy livery. during his studies in Greece. He frequently visits our country, as he maintains friendships with many Greeks and compatriots who live permanently in Greece.
