Mitsotakis to the Financial Times: “Europe must spend more on its defense”
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
On the day of his participation in the Informal European Council in Brussels, during which the 27 EU members are expected to raise the issue of common European defense, the prime minister states, among other things, in an article titled “Europe must spend more on its defense” that “if our Union is to remain a pillar of peace and stability, we must acquire a strong, unified and credible deterrent. There is no time to waste.”
Defending his long-standing view that Europe must assume greater responsibility for its security, the Greek prime minister proposes “the creation of a new European instrument, amounting to at least 100 billion euros, to finance our collective defense needs.” Also, Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterates that "military spending should be exempt from EU fiscal rules" and that the European defense industry should be transformed.
