Greek fire fighting aircraft fighitng wildfires in Portugal
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The fires in Portugal are being fought by two Greek Canadairs since yesterday.
The two Cl 415 firefighting aircraft with the pilots of the Greek Air Force arrived in Iberia yesterday at noon and immediately threw themselves into the battle with the flames, 60 miles north of Monte Real airport at an altitude of 7000 feet.
This is a difficult, rocky area with low vegetation and trees and with 4 active fronts.
Portugal's request is the second to which Greece has responded, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, as since yesterday 20 Greek forest commanders of the EMODE have also been operating in the Genestoso area, Asturias, Spain.
