A 33-year-old tourist from Poland was found unconscious floating in the sea in Agios Andreas and was rescued by the Emergency Medical Services and the Port Authority of Ierapetra.

The 33-year-old Polish man is in stable condition in the ICU of Agios Nikolaos Hospital, after being found at midnight on Tuesday (8/9) floating unconscious in the sea, in the area of Agios Andreas, approximately two kilometers outside Ierapetra.

The 33-year-old was noticed by tavern patrons, who saw the man in the sea and notified the Emergency Medical Services and the Port Authority of Ierapetra.

The Emergency Medical Services rescuers rushed to the scene and, entering the sea with their clothes on, managed to reach and pull the man to shore. A resuscitation operation followed, with rescuers managing to restore his heart function.

The 33-year-old was then transferred to Ierapetra Hospital, where doctors continued their efforts to stabilize him. It was deemed necessary to intubate him and transfer him to the ICU of Agios Nikolaos Hospital, where he remains under medical supervision.

The marriage proposal and the dramatic developments
According to information, the 33-year-old was in Crete on vacation with his partner and they were staying at a hotel in the area.

That same night, the man allegedly proposed to his partner, who, according to the same information, did not accept it.

In a state of agitation, the 33-year-old allegedly caused serious damage to the hotel room and left the accommodation, heading towards the beach of Agios Andreas.

The same information states that the 33-year-old had consumed a large amount of alcohol, while he had allegedly informed his partner of his intention to end his life.

A few hours later, he was found unconscious in the sea by the patrons of the neighboring tavern, who immediately called for help.

The mobilization of the EKAB and the Ierapetra Port Authority, as well as the decisive intervention of the rescuers who entered the sea to retrieve him, proved crucial for his rescue.

The 33-year-old remains in the ICU of Agios Nikolaos Hospital, with his health condition described as stable.

The preliminary investigation into the incident has been undertaken by the Ierapetra Port Authority.
