Violent incidents erupted during a demonstration against police violence, resulting in hooded men beating a police officer from the "Action" group, who was eventually transported with serious injuries to the 401st Military Hospital, but his life was not in danger. The incidents took place in Nea Smyrni square.

Tensions erupted shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday in Nea Smyrni Square, when, according to the Hellenic Police, about 30 people attacked DIAS police officers.

In a piece published in the online edition of British newspaper The Guardian titled “10 of the best city neighbourhoods in Europe: readers’ tips”, readers wrote about their favourtite neighbourhoods in Europe, one of which was Nea Smyrni in Athens. Others included areas in Kraków, Utrecht, Madrid etc.
