The Northern Aegean islands of Lesvos, Samos and Chios will be in total lockdown on January 22, as the local councils decided to go on a 24-hour strike in protest of the handling by the government of the refugee and illegal immigrant crisis.

The electrical interconnection of the islands of the North Aegean with underwater cables is part of the preliminary Ten-Year Development Plan  of the Independent Electricity Transmission Operator for the years 2021-2030 which was put to public consultation.

A total of 424 new asylum seekers reached Greek islands in the northern Aegean between midnight and noon on Saturday, the North Aegean police announced.
