Greek budget shows primary surplus of 3.544 bln euros in Jan-Aug

Greek state budget recorded a primary surplus of 3.544 billion euros in the January-August period, from a primary surplus of 2.117 billion in the same period last year and a budget target for a surplus of 3.573 billion, the Finance ministry said on Monday.

The contribution of tourism to the Greek economy totaled 18.63 pct a survey conducted by Grant Thornton for the Hellenic Chambers of Hotels said, adding that according to 2016 data, hotels contributed around 10 pct of GDP and 6.5 pct of employment in the country.

Addressing Brookings Institution on Monday, European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici appeared optimistic about the progress of Greece. Greece is expected to “be able to return to the markets” at the end of the bailout program, he said.
