The 2027 European Film Awards in Athens
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Athens will be the first city in Southeastern Europe to host the 39th European Film Awards on 16 January 2027.
This event is the result of the successful proposal submitted by the Hellenic Centre for Cinema, Audiovisual Media and Creativity (EKKOMED) - Creative Greece to the European Film Academy. The proposal was supported by the Ministries of Culture, National Economy and Finance and Tourism.
The event marks a pivotal moment for the Greek film industry and the country’s visibility on the European and international cultural scene.
E.K.K.O.M.E.D.-Creative Greece, in collaboration with the European Film Academy, will undertake the organization of the central ceremony and the parallel events that will take place until January 2027. The organization will be supported by important public bodies, such as the three Ministries, the Municipality of Athens, the Region of Attica, ERT, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
History and Significance of the European Film Awards
The European Film Awards, which began in 1988 in Berlin, are dedicated to the promotion of European filmmaking. Every two years they are held in Berlin, while the remaining years they "travel" to different cities in Europe, such as London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Warsaw, Copenhagen, Tallinn, Malta, Riga, Seville, Reykjavik.
In 2024 they were hosted in Lucerne, Switzerland, while in 2025 they will return to Berlin. In 2027, Athens will be the next important stop of this great institution, placing Greece at the epicenter of European filmmaking.
"In Athens, one of the most emblematic events of European cinema"
The Minister of Culture Dr. Lina Mendoni stated: “Athens welcomes one of the most emblematic events of European cinema, having the honor of hosting, for the first time, the 39th European Film Awards, at the initiative of the Greek Center for Cinema, Audiovisual Media and Creativity-Creative Greece, which also undertook the co-organization of the event.
The choice of Athens validates its dynamism as an international cultural hub, hosting events of supra-local scope, a dynamic core of the modern creative industry, strengthening the extroversion of domestic audiovisual production. At the same time, it constitutes an outstanding opportunity for the renewal of the ties of our creators with their European peers. It highlights their high-quality work, proving that the systematic efforts of the Ministry of Culture, with the continuous encouragement and substantial support of the Greek audiovisual sector, are bearing fruit. Combining the excellent aesthetic result with commercial extroversion, it demonstrates that Culture is both a good and a product, supporting those who work in it. I am certain that creators and audiences will enjoy a unique event, the success of which is assured.”
The CEO of EKKOMED-Creative Greece, Mr. Leonidas Christopoulos, stated: “We are extremely proud that as EKKOMED we secured the hosting of the 39th European Film Awards in Athens, an event that is taking place for the first time in Southeastern Europe. The choice of the city highlights our long cultural heritage and at the same time reflects the ever-growing momentum and influence of Greece in the European film and audiovisual industry. We are ready, with the support of the European Film Academy, to welcome the great celebration of European Cinema that will honor the art, creativity, talent and innovative spirit of creators from all over Europe.”
The CEO of the European Film Academy, Mr. Matthijs Wouter Knol, said: “We are delighted to announce that the European Film Awards will be held in the wonderful city of Athens. Greece, with its rich cultural heritage and long cinematic history, is the perfect setting to celebrate the achievements of European cinema. The vitality of today's Greek film industry will undoubtedly inspire the celebration of European cinema. We look forward to celebrating the brilliance of European filmmaking in such an exceptional setting.”
Parallel Events and Collaborations
The Municipality of Athens will organize the “Mayor’s Night” at the Zappeion Megaron, highlighting the importance of Athens as a center of culture and cinema.
The Thessaloniki International Film Festival, as the largest film festival in the country, will contribute with actions that will highlight the work and history of Greek cinema and the active role of Thessaloniki.
The main event will be hosted at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, with the presence of approximately 1,300 international guests, members of the Academy, representatives of the European film community and international media.
ERT, in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union, will broadcast the evening throughout Europe.
