Gay Rights Groups Condemn Recent Athenian Attacks
Greek human rights organizations denounced increasing attacks on the gay community, following Monday's brutal beating of two young males in Athens.
In the Pangrati area of Athens, the same-sex couple were relaxing on a park bench when they were attacked by motorcyclists who threw detergent on them, before they were beaten by a group, according to anti-racist activists. One suffered a broken leg.
The Keerfa association has accused Golden Dawn of the crime and stated:"Racist and homophobic attacks are unacceptable...We are not going to let the neo-Nazis of Golden Dawn sow their racist venom in our neighborhoods".
SYRIZA blamed the police force for not holding individuals responsible for the assault, "This incident shows the necessity to adopt an anti-hate law. Not having one only encourages attacks by the extreme right". Increased racist attacks have occurred recently in Greece.
