Politicians refuse religious oath

Rena Dourou, governor elect of the Attica region, does not want to be sworn into office under a religious oath, and will be given a civic oath in the presence of Ilion Metropolitan Bishop Athinagoras. However, she is not the only governor, nor the first to be sworn in under a civic oath.
SYRIZA member and new governor of the Ionian islands Theodoros Galatsiatos was first, being sworn in at the beginning of August.
In the Attica region, apart from Rena Dourou, all deputy governors from SYRIZA, as well as all regional counselors belonging to the communist party (KKE), as well as Thanasis Tzimeros and Kostis Psaradellis of the coalition Dimiourgia Xana, and Despina Koutsoumba from ANTARSYA.
As the specific circular, on swearing in for political office states, that those who do not take a religious oath will be sworn by saying: “I swear on my honor and conscience to be fateful to the nation, to obey the constitution and laws and to fulfill my duties honorably and honestly...”
The swearing in will take place today, August 27th, in the Drosoupolis sports complex in the Ano Liosia municipality at 19.00 pm, local time.
