Rondos released on bail

Alex Rondos has been set free on 50,000 euros bail after his deposition to judicial authorities for his involvement in the case of a de-mining NGO.

Rondos is accused of falsifying affidavits, perfidiousness, and fraud along with five other persons since, according to the charges, from June 2002 to January 2003 he signed several papers granting financing to the NGO to realize de-mining projects in Bosnia and Lebanon, worth a total of 2.3 million euros.

The sum total of disbursed money received comes to nine million. In his defense Mr Rondos stated that he was not charged with the oversight of the inspecting the legitimacy of affidavits presented, but his role was purely political.

As he stated, his role was “to collaborate with the competent international authorities and organizations as a representative of the Greek government in the framework of providing aid to developing countries and countries in transition, after Greek accession to the OECD, because of my great experience in international diplomatic issues, and foreign policy.”

Mr Rondos maintains that of the authorizations, only two bear his signatures and the rest are forgeries. He produced a statement from a competent authority attesting to this.

He also stated that orders in this case came from far above him, at a central political level, as the issue was regulated as linked to foreign policy.
