The Ionian Motorway will connect Antirrion with Mesologi , Agrinio, Amphilochia, Arta ,and Ioannina, and is a project that everyone in Central Greece and Epirus and the Peloponnese is eagerly awaiting.
The Ionian Motorway is the most difficult highway under construction. The road passes through very difficult terrain and is mainly on the spine of the mountain range of Pindos. The road starts at Rio, and continues past Mesologi, Agrinio, Amphilochia, Arta, and Ioannina where it meets Egnatia Odos that traverses northen Greece from Evros to the coast of Epirus. It passes through the prefectures of Aetoloakarnanias, Arta, Preveza, and Ioannina. Its completion is expected to give a major boost to the development of the region, which is considered, according to EU figures, the poorest in Europe.
The contractor released progress so far through a video with graphics and images. The projects are expected to be completed in 2016, while the route from Antirrion to Ioannina will be covered in 100 minutes.
