Floods kill two in northern Greece
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A 63-year-old man was found dead early Tuesday north of the city of Thessaloniki, after his car was swept away by floodwater. It was the second death attributed to the torrential rainfall that continued for a fourth day.
On Monday, 30 immigrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan suspected of trying to enter the country illegally were rescued from a small islet on the Evros River that forms the border with Turkey.
Authorities carried out controlled flooding of 6,000 hectares of farmland to lower the risk to populated areas along the river.
