First round to elect president fails

The Greek Parliament on Wednesday failed to elect Stavros Dimas as president of the Hellenic Republic in the first of three rounds of voting for the presidential election.
Of the 300 members of parliament, 160 voted in favour of the government's candidate Stavros Dimas, with 135 against, and 5 absent, short of the 200-vote supermajority needed to elect a president in the first round as required by article 32 of the Constitution.
"I am sure we will elect a Greek president," Prime Minister Antonis Samaras told reporters after the vote; "Conditions are difficult, Greek lawmakers are aware that the country cannot afford adventures," he said. A second round of voting will be held on December 23, and a possible final round on December 29, when the threshold needed for victory falls to 180.
