Koundoura: 'We will not damage all inclusive resorts'

The Deputy Minister for Tourism and Independent Greeks MP, Elena Koundoura, sought to provide reassurances that the ministry would not take actions damaging to all-inclusive tourist resorts in Greece.

“There won’t be any actions at the expense of all-inclusive products,” she responded when asked about the issue by journalists. “On the contrary through further qualitative improvements of the particular products, the diffusion of the benefits of [all-inclusive resorts] in local markets and communities will be bolstered.”

Ms Koundoura sought to provide the assurances after taking over the role of Deputy Minister responsible for tourism in the newly created ‘super ministry’ of the economy.

In the past Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and other members of SYRIZA have railed against all-inclusive resorts which they see as damaging to local economies as they cut off tourists from local businesses.

Following SYRIZA’s win in the polls there was concern in the sector that the new government would move to increase taxes and regulations on the resorts. These worries have been reported in the international media such as in this rather breathless article in the Daily Mail under the headline, “Greece's radical new leader declares war on country's all-inclusive resorts visited by tens of thousands of Brits each year”.
