Through the tragedy there wan an outburst of humanity. Many dived into the sea to save their fellow human beings. Antonios Deligiorgis, Sergeant in the Hellenic Army, rescued 20 migrants as was broadcast by media from Rhodes.
The Sergeant from Leros who is serving on Rhodes was in the area and immediately plunged into the sea. It was not easy trying to rescue the hapless refugees because as he explained, there are very strong currents in the area.
The description of what lived through trying to save as many he could was shocking "There was a woman nine months pregnant, which I helped and others I pulled out. By force, in the beginning, I managed to pass two or three people to rescuers on land. There were about ten in the same place. Among them was also a 40-year old man, who was breathing with difficulty. She had almost lost consciousness. Later I learned that, despite the efforts of rescuers, she did not make it. What I will never forget was the image of the child that was recovered dead at the hands of a rescuer " he describes in shock.
