Tax and bank cross-check to be completed in September

A sweeping cross-check of tax declarations with bank accounts for the period 2000-2012 will be completed in September and authorities have already noted many cases of inconsistencies in the statements, Alternate Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis said in an interview published on Sunday.
"Authorities have located individuals and businesses with millions in bank deposits who declared an annual income of 60,000 or 70,000 euros. They will all be called automatically to explain where they found that money. I’m talking about hundreds of thousands of individuals and accounts,” the minister was quoted as telling Greek newspaper Proto Thema.
Asked about potential changes in the taxation of sip owners, Alexiadis said: “The Greek ship owners who have proved in critical times their patriotic feelings will once again need to prove they love the country. But if we try to burden shipping more than we should, this will work in favour of the shipping in other European countries. At the same time, we will lose our country’s competitive edge, as well as valuable revenues.”
He continued to say that any changes in taxation will first be discussed with the sector.
