Clashes among migrants in Lesvos
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Scuffles keep erupting between groups of different nationalities of migrants on the island of Lesvos on Tuesday, where hundreds of refugees are waiting to be processed by the overwhelmed Greek authorities so that they can move into hospitality centres and then with ships to Athens.
The clashes break out because Syrian refugees – and especially women and children – are being processed faster than the other ethnicities causing resentment among the other groups.
Authorities are using just two computers set up in a container near the port of Mytilene to register migrants who are made to wait for hours. The delays and exhaustion have also led to aggressive behavior towards coast guard officials.
It is estimated that about 4,000 migrants are waiting at the port to board ships to Piraeus. On Monday and Tuesday, just 300 people were able to board the ferries.
