Medical Tourism Gaining Ground in Greece

Greece is gaining ground as a medical tourism destination thanks to the quality and variety of medical services offered, the friendlier costs and the wide array of holiday choices.

According to Athens-based Cosmetic Derma Medicine Medical Group, indicative of the growing trend is the number of hair transplant sessions carried out, up by 73 percent, in the 2013-2015 period in Athens alone.

The medical group attributes the growth to a combination of high expertise and low costs.

“Medical tourism in Greece combines services of very high quality with low prices, compared to Northern Europe and the US. At the same time, a foreigner can enjoy his stay in Athens, sightseeing or taking some time to travel to a Greek island,” explains Anastasios Vekris, plastic surgeon and medical director of Advanced Hair Clinics.

Dr Vekris adds that three in 10 patients come from abroad, many of whom are high-ranking officials or VIPs. Most come from the Middle East, central and northern Europe, the UK, “but this year, we also had clients coming from as far as the US, Canada and Panama”, he added.
