IMF calls for more reforms and more decisive debt relief measures
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
During “The Economist” conference yesterday, the IMF representative criticized once again the mix of measures of the current program as well as the lack of substantial debt relief measures, reiterating the Fund’s view that the targets of the program are unlikely to be achieved.
The IMF’s mission chief in Greece, Ms. Velculescu urged Greece to focus on structural reforms, stating that the recent measures are based on higher tax rates and not on broadening the tax base while characterizing the recent pension reform as inadequate.
She proposed a more realistic set of primary surplus targets for the medium term and clarified that more debt relief measures are needed in order to satisfy IMF’s requirements and pave the way for their participation in the program with additional financing, given that the Greek public debt is clearly unsustainable according to the IMF’s view.
