Schäuble refuses freeze of Greek interest rates

The German financial newspaper “Handelsblatt” published an extensive article on the issue of Greek debt relief, stressing that the German Finance Ministry and its head, Wolfgang Schäuble, display an utterly defensive attitude.
According to the newspaper, the German Finance Minister will travel to Washington, in mid April, to attend the Spring Meeting of the IMF. The issue of the Greek crisis is likely to be discussed again there, “behind closed doors”. The IMF still insists on relieving the Greek debt service obligations, even if the German Finance Ministry claims otherwise, reads the article.
In an interview with the same newspaper, Greek Minister for Environment and Energy Giorgos Stathakis expressed his hope that Berlin will be more understanding in the event of a governmental change in Germany. “Many Europeans hope that if Martin Schulz becomes Chancellor, he will amend the European rules on debt”, he stated.
