Tension between Menidi residents and Roma
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The township of Menidi is starting to resemble a pot ready to overflow after the death of 11-year-old Marios from a stray bullet in the courtyard of his school.
The sad event became a reason to bring to light - once again - that the region has become a lawless no man's land, where drugs, weapons and continuous shooting are part of everyday life, with the police being absent.
In recent days, residents have been demonstrating on the streets of Menidi asking for order in their area. However, there were retaliatory incidents ason Sunday petrol bombs were thrown that burned two Roma homes in the settlement of Avli in Menidi.
The episodes began when a block of people split off from the demonstration in the center of Menidi, joined by a team that had come out of the Acharnaic Stadium and attempted to invade the settlement. They headed for the Roma camp. However, on Dimokratias Avenue they were faced with police officers wishing to cut them off, in the face of worse episodes. Residents responded by throwing stones at police officers, and the latter responded by firing tear gas. On the side of the protesters, slogans were heard like "Out with the gypsies from Menidi."
