A large wildfire is raging in the forested area of Agia Irini in southwestern Cephalonia since Sunday afternoon.
Seven firefighting vehicles with 25 firemen are on the scene along with four Canadair and two Pezetel aircraft assisting the efforts from air, he said, adding that more forces are expected from the mainland.
"We're very optimistic that we will quickly manage to limit it," chief of the Ionian fire department services EfthimisGeorgakopoulos said, noting that homes in the area are safe.
Aghia Irini is close to one of the most touristic areas of the island, such as Skala, Poros and Tzanata village.
