Large wildfire in Lesvos continues to burn forestland

A large wildfire is burning olive trees and forestland in the region between Geras and Plomari in Lesvos since Thursday afternoon was deemed as "very difficult" by fire department officials, due to the strong winds fanning the flames.

The fire has spread in three separate fronts and is heading towards Karionas. Two firefighting planes and a Chinook helicopter are throwing water over the blaze and more forces are expected from Athens and Thessaloniki.
"I's a big fire and we don't have enough means," the deputy mayor on environment Nikos Karasavvas told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
Regional governor Christiana Kalogirou said she has asked the Alternate Minister of Citizen Protection Nikos Toskas for more men and aerial firefighting means to stop the flames.
"It is a very difficult situation. I have informed the competent ministries and we are asking for more help. We are expecting more men, vehicles (...) with the ship as well as additional aerial means. From the first moment we believed we would have a big and difficult fire and unfortunately it has been confirmed," she added.
