Benaki Museum of Toys opens

One of the ten best collections of toys in Europe will be housed at the new Benaki Museum of Toys that will be inaugurated on Sunday, October 22 at the Pyrgos Kouloura mansion in Paleo Faliro, south of Athens.

Benaki Museum has invited the public to join the festive event, from 10:00 to 18:00 on Sunday.
The mansion, built between 1897 and 1900 on what is now Posidonos Avenue, was a gift to the museum by Vera Kouloura, following the wishes of her husband, Athanassios Koulouras, benefactor and captain from the island of Hydra. It combines neo-Gothic, baroque and Art Nouveau elements.
The core collection was donated to Benaki by Maria Argyriadi and includes children's books and clothing from around the world. The Greek-related objects include infant and childhood toys from antiquity to the present, as well as handmade toys by retirees to replicate their childhood games.
The European-related objects consist of urban and popular toys from the 18th to the 20th centuries, mainly from Britain, France and Germany. The collection also includes European dolls representing traditional outfits from several areas in Greece.
A regular schedule of its hours of operation (Thursday through Sunday) will go into effect on October 26.
Inauguration, Oct. 22; regular schedule, as of Oct. 26, Thursday-Sunday, 10:00-18:00
