Water cut off in Thessaloniki plagues residents for fourth day

Τhe water cut in Thessaloniki has become a real survival game, causing suffering for tens of thousands of residents, since Tuesday afternoon.

Yannis Krestenitis, the chairman and chief executive of the Thessaloniki water authority EYATH, said yesterday on Radio Thessaloniki that "our goal is to repair the pipeline damage by Friday night" and that "we are trying to make a fair distribution of water to the citizens of Thessaloniki ".

On Thursday afternoon, EYATH stressed that until 8 pm on Friday, the water supply interruption will continue in the areas of Oreokastro, Efkarpia of the Municipality of Mela, Pefka of the Municipality of Neapolis-Sykies, Meteora and Polichni of the municipality of Mela, and also in Evosmos.

At the same time, the interruption of water has caused several problems in the operation of the city, as hospitals, schools will remain closed today, with Michalis Zorpidis, President of the Trade Association, expressing its utmost protest over water supply problems, commenting that "water shortage is killings the city".

Meanwhile, inhabitants are rushing to buy bottles of water, which have run our in most venues. This has opened up a niche trade for fly-by-night enterpreneurs that are ferrying bottled water from other areas and hawking it at higher prices on street corners.

At the same time, several schools are closed, for concerns over the health and safety of students.

Due to the water supply problems, the University of Macedonia did not function and neither did the Central Library of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
