Tsipras hints at Spring elections
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Alexis Tsipras has opened a window for elections in May, for the first time.
During the meeting of the political council, he appeared to support officials of SYRIZA that maintained that "the government's desire is to go to the end of the four year term," that is to say, in the autumn of 2019, but the elections are "likely to be held in May".
This was the first time that the May benchmark has been set for a triple, essentially, electoral run-up, as government officials have refuted the possibility of early recourse to the polls, all the time.
The prime minister has caused several headlines by urging journalists to go for a summer swim when asking about the election question. But his comrades revealed most of his thoughts after appearing -informaily- aware of the difficulties faced by the government and given how the situation is shaping up the possibility for Spring elections.
Before the political council, Mr Tsipras appeared determined to go to the end of the implementation of the Prespes agreement without counting the political costs, but the estimate is that he is slowly retreating.
But at the same time, it seems that the government camp does not have a clear picture of the government's final choices. It may be that Alexis Tsipras feels that ANEL will not overthrow the government, but the will of Panos Kammenos,as he said yesterday, is still unknown, with his attitude making it harder to determine what concerns the "Macedonian" name issue.
