Images of biblical destruction were recounted by the Mayor of Rafina-Pikermi Vangelis Bournous describing the devastating fire that broke out in the afternoon in Penteli and took uncontrollable dimensions.
"I've seen two hundred houses burning, and so many other ars. I do not want to sow to ear, but I think there will be fatalities," he said in his latest statements on ANT1 television.
"The fire is uncontrollable and it is such a front that firefighting forces are as if nonexistent. All the settlements in Mati, Kokkino Limanaki and Pefkonas have been engulfed by flames," said the Mayor.
General Secretary of Civil Protection Giorgos Kapakis asked to comment on the statements made by Mr. Bournous clarified that we have no idea of fatalities, there are appeals from burned citizens to ambulance services for aid.
Kapakis added that efforts are being made for those who are trapped on the beach to leave by sea with the assistance of the Coast Guard. He also announced that Greece has requested assistance from the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
Dozens of people are trapped in homes in Mati, as dozens of homes have been engulfed by the flames, while the fire brigade and EKAB (ambulance - paramedics) phones have not stopped accepting calls for help.
According to statements by the staff of EKAB, 20 interventions have already been carried out to free people with burns while at least 10 people have stayed in the hospital for hospitalization.
