More than 50 killed by fire. 25 bodies found huddled in field

An even more tragic dimension in the already horrific tragedy is given by today's macabre revelation: 25 people were found dead in the Kokkino Limanaki (Red Harbor) area. Most of them in a plot, just a breath away from the sea.

These people tried not to save their property, but to save their lives. And they did not make it.

As was reported, the victims are residents of the area and holidaymakers who were trapped by the fire and tried to reach the beach in Kokkino Limanaki, in the Argyri Akti area, to reach the boats that had been rescuing persons early.

However, they seem to have failed, as a cliff blocked their route to the sea.

According to the inhabitants of the area, the people who were found dead in the field were driving their cars on Democracy Street looking for a way out to Marathon. However, they became trapped. The fire approached them, and as they saw that they could not go out on a main road, they abandoned the cars in the middle of the road and tried to find a way out to the sea. At the point where they were found, there is a cliff and they were trapped in the field and all died. Some were found dead with burns from the fire, some others were chocked by the smoke.

Some of the dead, among whom there were families with young children, were found embraced. Obviously, at some point, realizing that there was no salvation, they embraced.

Note that, besides the dozens of dead people on the plot, the remains of a woman was still in a car on the road above this plot and three more in front of the Argyri Akti tavern.

Characteristic of the horrific sight rescuers behel this morning is the description of Red Cross's chief rescuer, Vassilis Andriopoulos:

As he describes:

"In the early hours we spotted the first man. We saw cars burned with the keys in the ignition, with the doors open and we immediately realized there would be many dead. At dawn we had a picture of the magnitude of the tragedy. Between two houses, in a field of 300 square meters, 25 people found a tragic death. Among them, sadly, young children. Families who sought salvation tried to escape and unfortunately found death. "

Following the macabre discovery today of the 25 dead at Argyri Akti and another body found in the sea off ​​Artemis, the victims of the fire in eastern Attica are now 53, and the number is expeted to rise. 156 people ar in hospital, 11 in critical condition. Scores are still issing.
