The creation of permanent American military bases in addition to Souda, in other cities in Greece was proposed to American counterpart James Mattis, by National Defense Minister Panos Karatos during their meeting at the Pentagon.
"Greece sees the US as a strategic partner and ally, the only one I would dare say. It is important for Greece that the United States develop military forces in the country on a more permanent basis, not only in the Gulf of Souda but also in Volos, Larissa and Alexandroupolis," Kammenos said, as shown in a video which the US Department of Defense put in its official Twitter account.
James Matiss, for his part, reaffirmed the close cooperation between Greece and the US in the defense sector and welcomed Greece's commitment to defense expenditure of around 2%, but also the recent agreement between the two countries on upgrading F-16 fighters.
