Democrats Abroad Greece plans U.S. Election Watch Party for Tuesday, November 6th

The American elections scheduled for Tuesday, November 6th, will determine the legislative course the USA will follow; Democrats Abroad Greece (DAGR) will be watching the contests across the 50 states, with senatorial and congressional seats pushing citizens to the polls.

DAGR will host a “virtual” party as a Facebook event to check in to and follow races in each state.  The Election Watch Party will begin at 10 pm on November 6th and conclude at 12 Noon on Wednesday, November 7th. Because of the 7-hour time difference on the East Coast and 10 hours with the West Coast, winners will not begin to be announced in the U.S. until at least 2 am Greek time, when the polls officially close at 7pm Eastern Standard Time.

By November 2nd more than 25 million registered voters had cast their ballot; these ballots have been cast through absentee voting, early voting or mail-in voting.  Members of DAGR cast their ballots using the absentee ballot method by postal mail or in states where it is permitted, electronic form.

Chairperson of Democrats Abroad Greece, Karen Lee, stated, “On Election Night 2016, most of us were sure Donald Trump could never be elected. So, I don’t think I’m going to predict the results this time. I can say that we’ve never seen this much energy in a midterm election. Women have been energized to action since Mr.  Trump took office, as have racial, ethnic and religious minorities. Young voters, likewise, are concerned about  the high price of education, their potential for a satisfying career with a livable wage, and a safe, healthy environment. Consequently, we’re optimistic and very proud of the diversity in our Democratic candidates across the country. Voter registrations are up! And here abroad, registrations are way up! Let’s say, we’re guardedly confident this year.”

Lee went on to say “Two years ago, Democrats united to support Mrs. Clinton, though many felt Sanders should have been the candidate. Pundits predicted the party would crack along this divide. In fact, what happened is that Democrats looked at the problems within the party and set out to fix them. Reform proposals, adopted by acclamation just two months ago, corrected some of the most contested practices. There’s better balance between the main centrist and progressive factions and more representation of minority and issues blocs. The result is diversity up and down the ballots, with new faces motivated to step up and run for office. This is particularly important in the state and local races where decisions are made that affect the very ability to vote. Voter suppression, intimidation, purging and more have been in the headlines. Gerrymandering could negatively affect Democratic hopes for flipping Congress this year. On the other hand, several lawsuits have stopped some of the worse purging excesses. Across the country, people are organizing to drive voters to the polls, to watch the polls and then critically analyze the results. Still, until some of the flaws in electoral law are corrected across all the states, our best defense is a good offense, that is turning out to vote and winning by overwhelming majorities.”

The Election Watch Party for DAGR will include live streaming from experts reviewing key seats in both the Senate and the House as well as Gubernatorial races. Reviews of the course of the election as well as the highlights will be presented.

The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act is a United States federal law dealing with elections and voting rights for United States citizens residing overseas. The act requires that all U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands allow U.S. citizens to register to vote and to vote by absentee ballot in federal elections; however, some states allow voting in non-federal elections. The act was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on August 28, 1986.

For more than 30 years US citizens living in Greece have the right to vote by absentee ballot.  Democrats Abroad Greece  is registered as an official non-profit organization.  Democrats Abroad is the official Democratic Party arm for the millions of Americans living outside the United States. The organization strives to provide Americans abroad a Democratic voice in the US government and elect Democratic candidates by mobilizing the overseas vote.

Democrats Abroad has more than 60 country committees throughout Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. These country committees keep Americans abroad informed of their rights and help them participate in the U.S. political process. Members live in more than 190 countries around the globe and vote in every state and Congressional district in the U.S.

Democrats Abroad is recognized as a "state" party by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and is represented on the DNC by eight voting members, as well as at the quadrennial Democratic National Convention.
