FAZ praises the simple Greek Salad
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
In a summer and philhellenic style, a short article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's (FAZ) gastronomic guide praises the rustic salad, which is referred to (slightly misspelled, with a mixture of English and German) as Greek Salat.
But the essence is elsewhere: "We spent the summer or at least a part of it in Greece. And we enjoyed, not only the incomparable Aegean waters or the remarkable hospitality of people who have been plagued by fires, refugee flows and debt crisis - but (we also enjoyed) a classic creation of Greek cuisine that we find everywhere in Athens, the Cyclades, and Crete. The menu appears as Greek Salat and, together with σομε tzatziki and a little bread, is a fresh and light, healthy, and extremely simple dish. "
For the Germans the "choriatiki" salad will always be a beautiful holiday memory. But what to drink with a Greek Salat? The German newspaper also gives an answer: "A glass of ouzo with ice and a little water or a Greek white wine, crisp and cool, from the indigenous Assyrtiko variety".
