Featured FM Dendias: Greece reemerges as a player in the global arena

Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias, who accompanied Prime Minister Mitsotakis to the 74th UN General Assembly in New York, and who also pursued a series of tangent meetings there, on Saturday said that Greece is leaving behind the introversion of the financial crisis and is ready to fulfill its geopolitical role.

"Greece has gone through a very deep crisis, a crisis that pushed it to a great degree of introversion, but Greece has returned, through our stable and enduring connections and meetings, and our willingness to play the role that fits us, as a country of the European Union, a country of the eastern Mediterranean, a democratic country, a country that has a lot to say in the Balkans and in the wider region," Dendias observed.

Dendias listed a wide range of issues involved in Greece's foreign policy, from Libya and Syria to the wider North African region, and also mentioned the plans for EU's enlargement.

"These are issues on which Greece can play an important role," he said.
"Greece will not be absent from international forums. We will be there with a clean, European and democratic voice that defends our interests but promotes our values and principles. In this context, we have intensified our contacts with the Arab world, with all the Gulf countries, and of course with Egypt and Libya and even with the Syrian opposition, that is, all those who have something to say, and we too, have something to tell them," he stressed.
While in New York, Dendias met with the Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as with the Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister. These discussions focused on issues of regional interest, with a scope for expanding economic cooperation and an emphasis on attracting investments to Greece.

The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs elaborated on the advantages offered by the Greek economy and both foreign ministers invited their Greek counterpart to visit their capital cities, an invitation that reportedly coincided with Dendia's intent to soon tour the Middle East and the Gulf region.

Finally, Dendias met with his Azerbaijani counterpart to discuss energy cooperation.
