Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos on Wednesday visited the bridge at Feres and the army, police and fire brigade officers that are in the area to intercept migration flows, wishing them strength in their task.
Ieronymos, who is touring the region of Evros, stated: "I am deeply moved and proud. I am sorry for the people that are pushed to come here, because they are being used as tools in the hands of another. We who are here at the European borders, must insist that Europe does not shut its eyes to such phenomena," he said.
The Archbishop noted that the forces guarding the border have the support of the Greek people and that Greeks feel proud of them "even when they see these tragic scenes, which are are on many occasions promoted in order to create impressions."
The next stop in Ieronymos' tour is Kastanies and the northern part of the region.
