The opening of a new accommodation facility for unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in Greece, in a building east of the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, has been postponed until the end of summer, the city's deputy mayor revealed on Wednesday.
The pandemic is preventing the opening of the facility while restoration work is needed on the builiding, which is to host 20 minors aged up to 18 years old.
The minors will be selected according to the directions given by the migration minsitry, Thessaloniki Deputy Mayor Giorgos Avarlis said to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Wednesday.
Avarlis said that there was no decision for the operation of a second facility in the Thessaloniki municipality at present but the municipal council has pledged to support the effort for the protection of unaccompanied refugee children and the operation of another facility will depend on the needs that arise.
