Controversy about seismic activity in the Gulf of Corinth

The president of the Greek Academy of Sciences, Professor of Dynamic Tectonics Applied Geology and Natural Disaster Management, Efthymios Lekkas, in a radio interview, expressed reservations about the evolution of seismic activity, after the 5.1 Richter earthquake last Sunday in the Corinthian Gulf, stressing that the area has been put under strict surveillance by seismologists.

"There is a caveat that is essentially based on the fact that after the 5.1 Richter earthquake that happened at one o'clock on Sunday morning, we do not have an adequate seismic or post-seismic sequence so far.

"We've only had a few earthquakes of the order of 1.5 - 2 Richter and we would expect something more, that is, at least one earthquake above 4 Richter and many around 3 to 4 Richter," said Mr. Lekkas emphasizing that it is " the probabilitiesare open' that a bigger earthquake or the same magnitude as Sunday's will follow.
