The Fire Department managed to bring under control the fire that broke out early today at the well-known Italian restaurant Cavaliere, which is located on the ground floor of an apartment building on Eleftheriou Venizelou Street in Nea Smyrni.

The restaurant was completely destroyed, while damage was caused to the facade of the apartment building as well as to the apartments. 20 firefighters with 9 vehicles responded to the scene. According to the Fire Department, 5 people were freed from the apartment building. Among them there is an injured person who was taken to the Evangelismos hospital, as well as a mother with her baby, who were taken to the Children's hospital as a precaution.

The fire broke out at 04:30 in the morning and immediately disturbed the entire neighborhood due to the smoke, but also from the sounds that were being heard.

The Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire. The first daylight images from the restaurant show the scale of the devastation.

At the time the fire broke out, a foreign cleaning worker was in the restaurant, who reported that unknown people broke the windows, threw something inside and immediately the fire broke out.

As can be seen in the following videos the restaurant that was engulfed in flames was completely destroyed, while damages were also caused to apartments in the apartment building.

"My company and I happened to be passing by when we saw the entire building engulfed in smoke and the restaurant engulfed in flames. We quickly left the scene because we could hear loud explosions, probably from gas bottles that were in the restaurant's kitchen," an eyewitness told iefimerida.gr about the moment the fire was in full swing.
