How 20-year-old Merchant Marine cadet Marianna collapsed within days of India trip

Immense sadness was caused by the untimely death of 20-year-old Marianna Tsiga, the Merchant Marine cadet who suddenly fell ill while on board a training trip to India and ended up in Athens.
It was her dream to travel, and that's why she sat Pan-Hellenic examinations twice, just to get into this school. Her first trip, however, was fatal.
How 20-year-old Marianna collapsed in a few days
Marianna Tsiga, originally from Kos, had completed the first year of studies at the Kalymnos School of Merchant Mariners, and last August she began her educational journey, as planned, on a Greek tanker.
She boarded the ship at a port in the United Arab Emirates, Fujairah, and everything went smoothly until the ship was in Indian territory. Suddenly, the 20-year-old felt unwell, for no reason. As the ship approached the port of Suez, it was deemed appropriate for Marianna Tsiga to disembark accompanied by medical personnel, under the responsibility of the ship-owning company. There it was deemed appropriate for the young woman to return to Athens via Egypt, as she did. On September 2, she arrived in Athens and was first treated in a private clinic in Piraeus, while he was then transferred to a hospital in Attica. It ended on September 17th.
The autopsy will provide answers for the 20-year-old Merchant Navy cadet
The results of the autopsy are expected to shed light on the case, however, the indications of her illness lead to the first conclusion, of infectious encephalitis which was probably caused after a mosquito bite and which eventually caused multi-organ failure in the 20-year-old, resulting in her death .
The climate is particularly heavy in Kalymnos, at the school where she studied, but also in Kos, her special hometown, where her funeral will take place this afternoon.
A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Coast Guard to establish what exactly happened, while employees on the ship are giving statements, as well as the medical staff who treated her.
The Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Christos Stylianidis, said: "Shocked by the untimely death of Maria-Anna Tsigas, pilot master, crew member of a Greek-flagged tanker. Our thoughts are with Maria-Anna's family and friends. My sincere condolences".
